What is a Birth Doula?
The origin of the word "doula" comes from Greek and means "woman servant". It is pronounced doo-luh.
As birth doula, I offer continuous emotional and physical support before, during, and after childbirth. In addition, I also provide assistance by gathering research based information for the expecting family in order to make informed decisions and to prepare for birth and the new life with their baby. Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth:
Tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications. Reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience. Reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans. Reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals. I support your labor and birth choices:Homebirth, Birth Center, Hospital Birth, non-medicated and medicated, VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), VBAMC (Vaginal Birth After Multiple Cesareans), planned cesarean, unplanned cesarean, surrogacy.
What if I have a cesarean delivery?
In case of a cesarean delivery, I can help you understand the procedures and design a birth plan specifically for cesareans. Depending on hospital's policy and the anesthesiologist, I may stay with you during the surgery or join you while your partner stays with the baby. I can help you relax and help initiate breastfeeding, take photographs, etc. Other services listed above also apply for cesarean deliveries. Planned cesarean support is also available.
