Before hiring a doula, you, the dad, might be worried that I will replace your role. Perhaps you are be worried that I will remove the intimacy at birth or that mom doesn't trust you enough to support her during labor.

Let me tell you that I will never be able or want to replace the role of the person mom loves. Just like moms, dads are excited, and scared, and don't know what to expect since every birth is different. My role is to support the both of you and make this experience as joyful as possible so you can cherish this special experience.

How would it benefit you, the dad, having me present you ask?

• I can suggest and encourage you to touch, to talk, and to help in ways the mom enjoys it so you can share the joy of birth together. Please note that if you don't feel comfortable being actively involved, I will not push you.

• If I come to your home in early labor, I can stay with the laboring mom while you take care of the last-minute things like calling relatives, friends or babysitter, finish packing the hospital bag, etc.

• I will make sure that you don't forget to eat and drink and my presence will allow you to take a break during a long labor without having to feel guilty.

• I will remind you of your wishes, choices, and alternatives if interventions are suggested.

• I can help preserve a peaceful and a private environment since delivery rooms tend to be anything else but empty.
