What Is Elle TENS for Labor?

The Elle TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine is a small battery operated device that has been used to manage pain for many years. It is s now commonly used in United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and Canada for labor management. TENS works by sending painless electrical impulses though electrodes placed on skin. Those impulses block pain and stimulate the body to release pain reducing endorphins and encephalins. The Elle TENS has been specifically designed for use in labor.

Pros

  • Easy to use with pre-programmed settings and an integrated boost button 
  • Mom will stay alert and can control the strength herself
  • Non-invasive and non-addictive
  • Safe for mom and baby
  • Allows the use of most comfort measures and positions
  • Can be used in early labor and though first stage of labor

Cons

  • Cannot be used in water 
  • May take an hour or so until the body builds up enough endorphins to ease contractions
  • Makes it more difficult for your birth partner or doula to massage your back
  • Can't be used with continuous fetal monitoring
  • Mom may not like the sensation

Precautions

TENS has to be removed before entering tub, shower, etc. Do no use the unit if you have epilepsy, a pacemaker, heart condition/s, or broken or desensitized skin. Check with your care provider for use before 37 weeks.
